Working as an actual writer is a huge difference from being a lunch break writer, and I have decided to make the plunge. I now realize that's exactly what I was doing. Writing for an hour here, and an hour there, and spending up to 2 or 3 hours writing (tops) before a deadline. This is not enough, and I feel that my final product suffered as a result. I could've gone deeper with a character, or further fleshed out a scene; by procrastinating, I did not give myself a chance to make my writing better. Writing for me has now become a career, not a hobby. While acting may be my first love, there are things that I have discovered about creation from my writing class this semester, and I realize that expressing myself as an actor isn't enough. There seems to be a void no matter how many auditions I go on, or how hard I am working in acting class. Writing is a very complementary form of expression to acting, but it is also very different, in that it works different muscles. It's like going to the gym and choosing between doing cardio, and doing weight training. Both exercises are necessary for a well balanced, efficient body. Therefore, I plan to treat these careers as I treat my body. I will write on this blog every other day. Whether I have much or very little to say, every single rep (blog entry) will push me into a forward direction. It is the inactivity of exercise that causes us to move backward, and lose the progree we've previously made. It is the same with creativity. I pledge that I will keep my tools sharp. I do not know what I will write about on any given day, but the most important thing is that I WILL be writing on any given day. I do hope you enjoy. And if you don't, I better- because this stuff takes very valuable time out my day!
P.S. I also pledge not to write about myself, my career (or lack thereof) all the time. How dreadfully boring would that be?
Cheers,
PW
